MGMT’s follow upMGMT hope to have their second release out next summer02 July 2008 - MGMT have been speaking to 6 Music about their plans to release the follow up to their debut
Oracular Spectacular - which debuted at number 12 in the album chart.Following their appearance at Glastonbury the American Electro-poppers have just announced details of two low-key shows amidst their tour of Europe. Warming up for their appearances at Reading and Leeds Festivals, the duo will bring their band to Oxford and Norwich on the 19 and 21 of August respectively.
Plans For A Second AlbumWhilst at Glastonbury,
MGMT revealed they have some new material in very basic form and are itching to get back into the studio to record the follow up to their critically acclaimed debut.Their diary is currently filled with touring until December, but the duo were able to give 6 Music a rough idea as to when their second record should be released.
Andrew VanWyngarden explained: "We’ve been longing to get in the studio for a while because we got out of it recording our last album about a year ago. So we’re definitely ready to start working on some new stuff but I think in January we’re gonna start recording and hopefully put an album out next summer."As to their process of creating new material,
Ben Goldwasser said: "We work better when we sit down in a room and go for it, but we don’t have much time to do that right now."
No Time For ReflectionBy the crowds that turned up to watch their performances at Glastonbury (27-29 June) it is fair to say that
MGMT have been taken into the hearts of English music lovers. However, the band said that they didn’t really have time to think about the large crowd during their first show in the John Peel tent on Friday 27 June, due to technical hitches.
Goldwasser told 6 Music: "We had a lot of technical problems but I think in a way it actually helped us because we didn’t even have time to think about the fact that we were playing to so many people."We were there fussing with all our equipment and then all of a sudden it was like; ‘Oh, so we’re playing in front of thousands of people now.'"And as they grow in popularity the pair also spoke of their hopes for increased production to appear by Spring 2009 - in the form of bigger, more creative stage sets. With designs on the go at the moment, the boys told the BBC that they are eager to get a 30 foot cobra with lasers for eyes and, as
VanWyngarden said: "We want some mazes and miniature mountains so we look like giants." Collaborations
MGMT also admitted that playing Glastonbury was a great opportunity to meet other artists and plot future partnerships. Of the other artists on the festival bill, they would choose Jamie from the Klaxons, Kool Keith and Squarepusher as potential collaborators.Watch this space.
